10:01 am - Married!
GAAH! UPDATE!
My laptop's power cord broke several weeks ago, and with no internet at home, I haven't been online in almost forever...so, update.
1. Wedding is done.
2. Hawai'i honeymoon is done.
Pictures for both pending my return to my own computer.

I'm going through some major internet/gaming-sphere withdrawals, and I'm immensely tired. We got back home Monday night after 24 hours of travel, and I went straight to work Tuesday morning. Don't get a day off 'til Monday, then back to work on Tuesday. Ugh.

04:54 pm - Non-wedding update
Last Saturday I was able to enjoy some D&D for the first time in for-ev-er. I dropped in at Toy City during after-hours gaming to find that Myles was running a 5th-level 3.5 Ptolus game. From his copious notes it was evidently a homemade dungeon-crawl, and was LOTS of fun.
I was able to jump in as a Cleric of Lothian who had been an NPC. We were investigating an old, lost temple of Lothian in search of a divine book. However, devils had been at work desecrating the place. He had a lot of devil ass-kicking, some cool exploration and puzzle solving, as well as some great RPing. We ended up meeting St. Thomas, a mystical semi-divine being associated with Lothian theology. Myles worked him in in just the right way to allow the meeting with him to be awe-inspiring for the characters without having him steal the show from the PCs' efforts.
I got home much later than I intended to because I just had to stay til the end. A great time. Well done, Myles.
*
Got a new desktop PC this last week, and got to do some gaming on it last night with Alex and Spenser ([info]greenmtnboy18,[info]killthewhelp7) playing UrbanTerror over a LAN. Good times.
Now I have to work on getting internet at home so that the computer is good for something.
Oh, and it came with Vista Home Premium SP1. So far, I'm undecided about it. Compared to XP, it seems different, but not really better. I haven't found something to prove it worse, though either.

11:07 am - Stuff, and a question
So, today I managed to get my bike to shift into low gear. Damn, but that 3 mile ride to work isn't nearly as hard anymore. :-p
*
Got a hair cut yesterday. Still not convinced I look good in short-medium length hair, but I'm still planning to chop it all off right after the wedding. I don't want t have to deal with it at all in Hawai'i.
*
Here's a question for anyone who wants to answer:
Suppose you received a wedding invitation from either a friend or family member that said at the bottom "The bride and groom respectfully request that their ceremony and reception be kept alcohol-free."
Now, keeping in mind that both the bride and groom will be underage (if only by a couple of weeks) at the time of the wedding, what would you think of this? How would this affect your decision to attend (or not)?

I ask because this is the case with our wedding. Besides being underage, neither Katy nor I really care for alcohol (especially beer, which is what would show up with my family). My family has a long history of being avid drinkers, while Katy's family comes from a religious background that frowns on substance use, and therefore is 95% dry.
We've already gotten one or two RSVPs confirming no attendence (with no real excuse given (not that one is needed)), and there are some of my family who I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to just send a gift instead of having to endure their relatives while sober. So, I'm a little worried that attendence will suffer because of this decision (not that I'd be upset at people if they can't make it; we already have a couple people we know can't make it because they can't afford to travel or they're covering the day at work for a member of the wedding party).
The other thing I'm worried about is bootlegging, especially since the reception is at my parents' property. My dad is an alcoholic, and he will have beer in the fridge. It's really just a matter of whether he's going to have a beer can in hand, or whether he's going to be more subtle and start slipping vodka into things. Furthermore, my family is full of creatures of habit, and every family gathering up to this one has been BYOB. Either people are going to forget, ignore, or not notice the request on the invte, and bring their coolers with them.
Most of my family I'm comfortable enough with to go right up to them and say, more or less, "Steve, you're being a douchebag, stop it." The few that I wouldn't be confident enough to do that, my uncle would be. The thing is, I'd prefer not to have to do any of that. And I don't want drunks at my wedding.
Which is why I'm posing the question, to get an idea of the opinion out there.

12:31 pm - Honeymoon etc.
For those as of yet uninformed, Katy and I are getting married on June 14.

Yesterday we paid for, and therefore finalized and committed to, our honeymoon arrangements.
On the downside, it cost a buttload of cash.

On the upside, we're going to Hawai'i!

None of that namby-pamby laying on beaches, playing golf BS either. Volcano hiking, waterfalls, national parks. Cool stuff. Hopefully with lots of pigs and pineapples. Mmmm.
*
In other good news, I received A's in both classes I was taking this semester
*
Also, the other day I spent some time with my cousin Emily, who's laid up at home after an ACL surgery. She's bummed about not being able to play tennis for a while, so I brought over our Wii so she and her friend Janelle could play some Wii Sports tennis. It was lots of fun. Unsurprisingly, she was pretty good at Wii tennis. However, she wasn't so good at Wii bowling, because of not being able to actually stand up and bowl. A 61 isn't too good, but it's much better than Janelle's all time low bowling score of 4. And this was in real life bowling. With the gutter bumpers up. Wow. Luckily, she's better at Wii bowling.

03:36 pm - Shhhh!
For gods' sakes people...when did "library" stop meaning "STFU"?
In the words of the fellow who I shared a table with here last week, "I remember when I was a kid I'd get beat for yelling in the library."
Gah.

In happier news, I'm within spitting distance of the end of my term paper for Psych.
Must keep working...

Edit: and when did italic stop meaning italic? Answer: when I started posting in WYSIWYG. Duh.

05:14 pm - more of a bad day
Did I mention I got a parking ticket (my first ever) a couple days ago because the meter which advertised that it accepted dollar coins refused to give me time for the dollar coins I put into it? Yeah.
Now I just got one today because I showed up 2 minutes after the meter maid who showed up 1 minute after my meter ran out.

ARGH.

Today was supposed to be productive, and so far it hasn't been very much...
Arrrggggh.

Also, why does Word auto-cap things that have no business being capitalized, yet refuses to auto-correct such misspellings as "refered" or "decisoin"? I mean, come on. An omission of one of a pair of letters, and a simple transposition....bah.

How nerdy...I just got flirted with by a Bookish Insecure Girl at the library.
Apparently I've lost my intimidating aura...
Can't wait until I get to wear my wedding ring. For one it is awesome, and for two, it will help counteract my roguish charm when it comes to being hit on by nerds.

Phew...between no internet at the new apartment (we're so rural that neither of the two major local carriers extend service to our area) and lots of work at the Job and work at the School, I haven't updated in about 4 months.

I feel like coming on to brag about my bullshitting ability. I have a research paper due tonight, and haven't been able to research or write at all during the past week. So, like last semester, I'm stuck doing all the work the day it's due. Bleah!

On the bright side, I managed to finish the (relatively short) paper. Apparently it takes approx X+.5 hours of bullshitting to write a paper X pages long.

08:29 am - Snow!
Holy crap!

Usually, the first snowfall of the year is a little flurry, maybe a light dusting. You see some white specks in the wind, some of them stick to the ground, and it's all gone by noon.

I wake up today and we already have like half an inch. Everything's all white and pretty, and the snow is still falling in fluffy chunks.

I appreciate the snow waiting until I got new tires and new boots.

07:53 pm - Wasted time and Thomas' shoes
I'm in class right now. The prof just announced that class will be ending an hour early. Awesome! Except...Katy is still in class, and I can't leave without her...so I'm stuck here for an extra hour waiting...blah.

Also I'm wearing Thomas' shoes. I think that the whole "walking in another person's shoes" thing is true. All this evening I've been typing long, verbose messages when simple ones would suffice. Thomas' shoes are turning me into Thomas.

Ack.
Also, for anyone wondering why I'm wearing Thomas' shoes, the reason is simple, yet pathetic: I was too lazy to do up the velcro on my own sneakers. Lace-less loafers: the shoe for the lazy man's lazy man.

05:19 pm - Semi-Auto...god I'm lazy
Today was really tiring. I got out of bed really late because my alarm clock has broken and I cannot afford a new one at the moment. I feel a bit strange because we've just moved to Idaho and there's a weird smell in the house. I'm so sad. My kitten got run over this afternoon. I found him when I was coming home from school. His head was all squished. I took some photos. I'll miss him. Poor kitty. Last night I had to finish my term paper on the history of pre-communist Russian society. I focussed on the needs of women. I think it's ok, but if I don't pass this I'll lose my scholarship. I want to tell the world to get fucked. I am updating this journal for the first time in ages, because I've been in prison. Today, I got a digital camera! Yes! Here's some photos of my girlfriend in the nude (but don't tell her that I've posted them here - she'll kill me! Har har.) I want to say thanks to the world for absolutely fucking nothing! You all suck. I feel so alone, no one ever reads this journal, or even comments to let me know that I'm not suffering alone. It's cold here, and I want to die, but I cannot figure out how many of you to take with me when I go. I went to the doctor yesterday, and he said I have bipolar disorder, which makes me different enough to be interesting, but the same as all the other cool people with bipolar disorder. That's enough for now. But I'll leave you with this thought - sharing your life with strangers on the internet is the cheapest form of therapy available. Leave a comment and tell me I'm beautiful. With recent topics that came up watching "Gamerz", I get that stuck in the past feeling again.
Today at work, Tracy called me old.
"I'm only four years older than you!" I said.
"Four years can do a lot to you." She replied.

Yeah, I guess so.

I don't know. The more I really think about it, the more I think it wasn't that old relationship that part of me misses. It's really adolescence in general; it's just that four years is a big chunk of adolescence (13-17), so I tend to cross-associate a lot.

I know I sound crazy, saying I miss high school. That's not really it though.

I don't really miss HS; I miss the feeling of having friends, of having few responsibilities, of trying things for the first time...all that.
I wish I could go back and do it over, knowing more of what I know now. I'd be able to do the things I wanted to do, be able to avoid all the stupid negative things I wasted my time on, be able to realize that I was giving too much of myself to someone who should have been given less....
Bah. I don't know. For the most part, I'm happy with my life as it is...it's a bit stressful now and again, but if "a bit stressful" is the only problem, I figure I'm well ahead of the game.

I'm just sitting here, reminiscing, thinking that youth is wasted on the young.
Maybe Tracy is right.
Maybe I am getting old.

05:13 pm - wanderlust
Had a thought just now.

I wonder if my Restless Leg Syndrome is connected (psychologically/physiologically) to the brief spurts of wanderlust I experience (especially on rainy days like today, where it just smells so good outside).

Just the whole "gotta move" thing.

Essentially, RLS is the urge to move one's legs...

That sounds to me like a definition of wanderlust as well.

12:22 pm - Good riddance!
Just found this on Yahoo News:

By MATT APUZZO, Associated Press Writer 6 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Alberto Gonzales, the nation's first Hispanic attorney general, announced his resignation Monday, driven from office after a wrenching standoff with congressional critics over his honesty and competence.

Republicans and Democrats alike had demanded his departure over the botched handling of FBI terror investigations and the firings of U.S. attorneys, but President Bush had defiantly stood by his Texas friend for months until accepting his resignation last Friday.

"After months of unfair treatment that has created a harmful distraction at the Justice Department, Judge Gonzales decided to submit his resignation and I have accepted his decision," Bush said from Texas, where he is vacationing.

Solicitor General Paul Clement will be acting attorney general until a replacement is found and confirmed by the Senate, Bush said.

12:06 pm - Freebase - Episode One
For the past week, Arges has been at the Eavesdown Docks preparing to get his new ship into the sky. The first thing he did was hire a pilot and a technician who actually knew which end of the ship was the nose. Arges couldn't be bothered with such things, he just wanted to travel and paint scenes from other planets. K.T. convinced him not to paint over the buttons on the console, and Zack convinced him to hire a cook. Luckily, Arges found one that could make waffles and do open-heart surgery. Perhaps realizing that they had very few honest job skills, he also saw fit to hire Kylan. If you're going to be making a living under the table, best to have someone who's spent their entire life under the table.
The week was busy, with hiring crew, getting the ship fueled/prepped, and loading luggage and equipment into bunks. They were finally ready to lift off when a man carrying a duffel bag came running up Freebase's bay ramp, asking for passage. He said he could pay a little, and that he was willing to work for his fare; security, cargo duty, whatever they needed, but he really wanted to get off of Persephone. Arges consented, and Mic came aboard. Freebase's new crew was finally complete and ready to launch into the Black.

Arges may have been content to paint the interior of the ship, but everyone else was looking for work, so K.T. plotted a course to Athens, with a layover at Dandelion Station for refueling and restocking the few items they didn't get on Persephone. On the way there, everyone met in the dining hall for a sort of "get to know each other" crew meeting. Arges freaked out when K.T. showed up, until she explained how "autopilot" works. Kylan got nervous when Mic started mentioning military ranks during an anecdote he was telling, and, fearing that Mic might have Alliance military connections, he quietly asked Arges if he had done background checks on the crew. Arges realized he hadn't, and started asking everyone if they were felons. Exasperation ensued.

At last, they arrived at Dandelion Station. Unfortunately, they were denied permission to dock, because all of the skyplex's docks were full. They'd have to wait for several hours in a holding pattern before they would get a chance to dock. Scanning the comm channels, Mic discovered the reason why Dandelion was so busy: turned out that a popular border world band, the Floating Hemiroids, was playing at the Watering Hole club for the weekend. The docks were full of small-crew vessels, mostly people hopping over from the nearest planets for the show. Most of the crew was content to wait until they got a free dock, but Arges and Zack really wanted to see the band ("If we wait, we'll miss the set!"), and set about planning to dock out of turn.
Their first ideas, influenced by Zack's destructive nature and Arges' penchant for the dramatic, involved tactics such as starting fires on other ships to cause an emergency, or blowing things up, or hijacking someone else's ship, or faking an injury or other medical emergency to gain a free dock, or some combination of the above ("What if we caused a medical emergency by setting someone on fire?"). They really didn't want to miss the gorram show. Eventually, cooler heads won out, and Mic and Zack spotted two other Firefly-class ships docked at the station. One had storage units retrofitted into its shuttle bays, but the other one had two bays that were empty. Celeste, being the voice of reason, sent a wave to the pilot of the ship (the "Xi Jian") and asked if they could dock Freebase's shuttle in the Xi Jian's bay. The crew said they would give him a signed Floating Hemiroids poster in exchange (one of the things that was in Arges collection of forged goods). The pilot readily agreed. He was staying aboard the ship because he didn't like the band, but the Xi Jian had a mercenary on board who loved them, and a signed poster would make him ridiculously happy. A happy mercenary means a happy crew.

K.T. and Kylan stayed on the ship while everyone else took the shuttle down to dock. Unfortunately, the shuttle docking program didn't synch up with the Xi Jian's, and they spent a few minutes stuck out on the wing before Zack was able to program a toggle into the command string that let him change the docking codes into the right configuration. Once they docked, the pilot showed them out of the Xi Jian into Dandelion Station. They turned the corner and headed down the docking arm toward the main spindle of the skyplex.

Fade to black.

11:50 am - Freebase - Opening Credits
(For those who are wondering, my campaign takes place during/after the events of the Firefly TV show, and before the events of the Serenity movie. I may use elements from the film in this campaign, but I'm essentially ignoring the whole "Miranda" plot line. Miranda may or may not exist, but if it does, it hasn't been rediscovered yet.)

Cast

  • Arges - Captain/Ship Owner. Not very good at either. An absentminded painter, his real passion is art. He's been using his artistry skills to do forgeries on the side, to pay the bills. He inherited the ship from his family, and not much else. Although, the authenticity of the will is questionable...
    • Played by Adam
  • K.T. - Pilot. She's ridiculously cute (even more so than Kaylee), with a face that makes you feel like you can tell her anything. She's also a very good pilot, although she always complains about her terrible luck. Afraid of doctors.
  • Celeste - Doctor/Cook. A highly skilled M.D. and a damn good chef, Celeste is an older lady with graying hair. She's eager to help with whatever she can, but chafes at pointless tasks and dislikes violence. When she was first hired, someone made a joke, "a sawbones that cooks? She's probably a cannibal!" Creepifyingly enough, she has yet to deny the "claim."
    • Played by John
  • Zack - Tech specialist. Raised a city boy on Bernadette, this young hacker turned his budding skills towards sabotage and other destructive means when the U-War broke out. He's sold his services to both IF and Alliance clients over his career. These various contacts mean that he knows many people on both ends of the social spectrum. He's not one for the outdoors, having spent most of his life indoors in front of a Cortex screen, and has allergies to most outdoorsy-type things.
    • Played by Steve
  • Kylan - Scout/criminal. Kylan is a career criminal, always mixed up in trouble of one sort of another. At some point, he got a job working for the Alliance as a lower-level operative running various "errands" for Parliamentary affiliates. When he decided he didn't like working for "The Man" and went AWOL, the Alliance put out warrants for him, and there are some Alliance officers personally looking for him. You don't cross the Alliance.
  • Michael ("Mic") - The Friendly Mercenary. Mic, in his own words, specializes in "getting people out of sticky situations." He's a good shot, can defend himself physically, and has some piloting skill. He also appears to have some sort of military past, but he's a little tight lipped about what exactly that past is.
    • Played by Mark
  • Freebase - Ship. An 03 Firefly class mid-bulk transport, Freebase was inherited and renamed by Arges (at least that's what the papers say). For ease of use, she's similar in most ways to Serenity, save that she only has one shuttle, the first one having been lost in whatever accident led to Arges inheritance.

Should the cast listing change in any way (lost characters, new characters, guest stars), I will make a note of it in the episode entry in which it happens, and also edit this post.
